A Honduran mother wished for her children a quality education in English without having to leave the town of Copán Ruinas. With vision, courage and the help of friends and family, she founded Mayatan Bilingual School.
Initially in a ramshackle building opposite the Main Archeological site in Copán Ruinas, the school started with just nine first-grade students in 1991. Since then the school has grown and grown. In the 2008-09 school year there are nearly 300 hundred students in grades PreK-9, with the future goals of opening a high school to allow students to complete grade 12 without having to leave Copán Ruinas.
With the aim of making an excellent bilingual education available not just to the elite but to students from middle and lower income families too, the school opened its doors to students ‘from all walks of life’. Over the years the scholarship program and the number of local and international sponsors has grown too and in 2001 Mayatan Foundation was initiated to direct the school and manage its finances.
From humble beginnings Mayatan Bilingual School has developed into the region’s premier education institute with new buildings, a new hillside location and 300 students. Around 40% of whom receive some form of financial assistance.
Our thanks to everyone past and present teachers and school staff, school directors, board members and our teams of supporters, both here in Honduras and overseas who have made this possible.
