Mayatan Assistance Program

At Mayatan Foundation, we believe in “improving education opportunities for students from all walks of life. Although Mayatan Bilingual School is one of the most affordable in all of Honduras it is still out of reach for many hard-working families that want to give their children an opportunity to get a solid education, to learn English and to provide them with "a pathway out of poverty". Many former teachers and visitors have wanted to help these children, but were unable to sponsor students directly. To provide them with an alternative we have implemented the Mayatan Assistance Program, or MAP.

Program Description (Back to Top)

The Mayatan Assistance Program allows for contributions from a large number of people to be combined in order to have the greatest possible impact upon the children of Copán Ruinas. Mayatan Foundation awards scholarships to students ranging from half tuition to a 'completa' which covers full tuition, registration fees, books, uniforms, lunch and transportation. Scholarships begin at PreKinder and continue through the end of 6th grade. These scholarships make it possible for many children to attend Mayatan Bilingual School.

Your investment in the MAP is what allows Mayatan to continue giving scholarships to students. 100% of your investment will be used to fund scholarships for needy students. Funds contributed to the MAP are used for two purposes:

  1. To pay the costs of scholarships awarded to students who have not yet found sponsors
  2. To award new scholarships to new students wishing to study at Mayatan

Costs

The actual cost to Mayatan Foundation of providing the various scholarships for the 2008-09 school year are listed below:

Mayatan Bilingual School Annual Costs (2008-09)

Level Tuition Books Registration Uniforms Meals Transportation
Pre-School
PreK & Kinder
$825 $160 $30 $150 $420 $215
Primary
1-6
$1,035 $185 $560
Secondary
6-9
$1,500 $215 $560

While the school does everything possible to keep costs low, such as looking for used and donated textbooks, and relying on teachers to volunteer their services, it is still a costly venture to provide a quality bilingual education for students.

The Students (Back to Top)

There are currently 55 students from “all walks of life” benefiting from the Mayatan Assistance Program. Families who desire for their children the opportunity to study at Mayatan but who are unable to pay the school fees are invited each Spring to an information session in which the application process is explained as well as the expectations that Mayatan has for its students. Based upon the funds that are available and the number of students who apply at the different levels, the Foundation is able to make decisions on how many scholarship grants it can award.

“all of the MAP students are eligible to be sponsored.”
If you would be interested in sponsoring a student please visit the
Student Sponsorship Program’ page.

Students in the Mayatan Assistance Program are those that are awaiting sponsorship and therefore all of the MAP students are eligible to be sponsored. Mayatan Foundation grants scholarships students without first having sponsors in place in order to extend the opportunity to gain a quality education to more students, while also giving potential sponsors more students to select from.
