What We Do

Mayatan Foundation is a registered Honduran non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of the residents of the town of Copán Ruinas located in the Western Highlands of Honduras just 12 kilometers from the border with Guatemala. The organization owns and operates Mayatan Bilingual School - a PreK-9 private school that teaches academic subjects in English and is registered with the Honduran Secretary of Education.

Mayatan Foundation...

  1. provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships for deserving students from families that would otherwise be unable to afford a quality education for their children
  2. operates several outreach projects throughout the year aimed at providing basic services for other residents of the town

Who We Help (Back to Top)

Mayatan Foundation helps the local people of the town of Copán Ruinas, Honduras. By providing scholarships so students can attend Mayatan Bilingual School; and outreach activities such as low-cost medical clinics we are helping to bring basic services of education, health screenings and medical attention to people who otherwise couldn't afford such things that so many people take for granted.

Mayatan Bilingual School Student Population

Over 40% of the students at Mayatan Bilingual School receive financial assistance from Mayatan Foundation.

  • 7% come from outlying Ch'orti' villages, whose indigenous communities are believed to be the descendants of the original Maya people. These families are usually subsistence farmers with very little land ownership or capital. We operate a full finance program for these children including shoes, uniform and often lunch in addition to tuition costs and books
  • 7% are from the poorest families in and around the town of Copán Ruinas and are receiving full tuition scholarships with registration and book fees paid as well
  • 26% who come from families able to contribute in some way to their child’s education but unable to afford the full school fees and receive assistance with their tuition costs ranging from 50% to 100%

By assisting in this way, our student body is made up of children from right across the financial spectrum – not just the very rich and the very poor. If you are interesting in learning more about how we do this, please visit the ‘Support Us’ page.

Impact (Back to Top)

Mayatan began in 1991 and in that time has been able to serve hundreds of students and their families by providing education opportunities that are superior to the available options through the public school system as well as enabling them to learn to English and broadening their employment opportunities.

By hosting medical clinics hundreds of local residents of Copan Ruinas have had the opportunity to gain medical attention that was out of their reach financially. At least four times a year groups of visiting doctors, dentists, surgeons and ophthalmologists have come to Copán Ruinas to provide free and low-cost services.
